Standard 9 Teachers are able to evaluate themselves. The teacher is a reflective practitioner who continually evaluates the effects of his or her choices and actions on pupils, parents, professionals in the learning community and others and who actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionally.
Rationale 1: Reflection was part of the Action Research Study that I implemented in my Sophomore English classes. I analyzed how students learn the language of Shakespeare using multisensory stimulation with technology. What I found is that the technology initially stalled my students’ learning. I reviewed literature to find out what other educators were trying in a Shakespeare classroom, and I reflected on the probable causes of my findings and was able to offer a few recommendations and a future plan of action.
KSD: 9.K.2 The teacher understands critical frameworks for reflecting on teaching practice (e.g. frameworks for social, cultural, and philosophical foundations of education). Reflection is a wonderful method of evaluating many aspects of my classroom. Spending several months on Action Research gave me many opportunities to reflect on my classroom methods, student learning, cultural environment, etc. When I reflect, I become more of an observer than a participant in my classroom. Knowing that each and every student in my classroom brings something different “to the table” forces me to reflect over and over to make sure that what I am doing in the classroom benefits all students.
9.S.3 The teacher seeks out professional literature, and other resources to support his/her own development as a learner and a teacher. My action research study was based on past classroom practices. I was able to shape the study using information I found in professional literature. Some methods that seemed to work for other teachers did not have the same impact in my classroom. Reflecting on the causes helped me reshape my practices to suit the needs of the students. I also enrolled in NCTE (National Council of Teachers of English) so that I will receive they secondary magazine English Journal.
9.D.2 The teacher is committed to reflection, assessment, and learning as an ongoing process. Although reflection was required for my Action Research Study, it is also a method I use daily in my classroom. I continually reflect on my methods, my students learning styles, the social and cultural environment of my district, and curriculum requirements.
